180g Vinyl LP!
Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series!
Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from Original Analog Tapes!
Produced by Music Matters' Joe Harley!
Pressed at RTI!

Between 1964-1967 the legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter created a treasured and deeply influential body of work within the acoustic jazz tradition with classic albums such as Night Dreamer, JuJu, Speak No Evil, and Adam's Apple that presented Shorter's brilliant and distinctive original compositions performed by various configurations of modern jazz masters. On 1967's Schizophrenia, Shorter arrived at the pinnacle of post-bop and gazed out at the horizons around him. A current of the avant-garde already coursed through his music and the next time he would enter the studio for Blue Note would be for his 1969 fusion exploration Super Nova. But in this moment, he produced one of his most complete and stylistically diverse artistic statements with a sextet of like-minded musical adventurers including James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums. The six-song set of original compositions includes several of Shorter's most enduring themes including the unforgettable groove of "Tom Thumb," the evocative "Go," and the beautiful ballad "Miyako," as well as Spaulding's churning piece "Kryptonite."

The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the "Tone Poet," on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.

Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology, Inc. Every aspect of these Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.

This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

...'unpredictable' is the operative phrase for this set of edgy post-bop. Shorter's compositions (as well as Spaulding's lone contribution, 'Kryptonite') have strong themes, but they lead into uncharted territory, constantly challenging the musicians and the listener. This music exists at the border between post-bop and free jazz - it's grounded in post-bop, but it knows what is happening across the border. Within a few years, he would cross that line, but Schizophrenia crackles with the excitement of Shorter and his colleagues trying to balance the two extremes.
-Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic.com, 4.5/5 stars
